Before the Windies’ match, Ravichandran Ashwin discusses how he dealt with jet lag and fatigue

On Day 1 of the first Test at Windsor Park in Dominica on Wednesday, Team India made a spectacular showing to kick off their tour of the West Indies, dismissing the hosts for only 150 runs. India finished the first day at 80 for no loss after putting up a strong batting effort to go along with their outstanding bowling performance.

The Windies’ batting order was hampered by the experienced Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked up yet another five-wicket haul.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-73745″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-750×422.png” alt=”” width=”1562″ height=”879″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-750×422.png 750w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-1024×576.png 1024w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-768×432.png 768w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-390×220.png 390w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon-150×84.png 150w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/www.theindiaprint.com-before-the-windies-match-ravichandran-ashwin-discusses-how-he-dealt-with-jet-lag-and-fatigue-83684522-11zon.png 1280w” sizes=”(max-width: 1562px) 100vw, 1562px” />

Despite experiencing jet lag and a heavy workload, the spinner described his process as he was ready to enter the match zone.

The 36-year-old stated, “I landed in Barbados and felt a little jet lagged as I had just come off the TNPL.”

“I felt like my shoulder, the arm speed, and the body position at the crease weren’t really ideal,” he said.

The net was OK while we were on the practice surface on the first day in Barbados, but during the practice game, I did not feel at all well.

He continued, “I simply felt like with the jet lag and the amount of exertion, my shoulder rotational speed and the body getting through to the ball and all these things take a certain amount of time. The second day I completed eight to ten overs and that was marginally better.

“And what happens is, sometimes when you are playing on really slow and turning surfaces, you do not know how much you need to impart on the ball, what sort of force you need to put from your shoulder,” the spinner par excellence said.

“So I always go and practice on a concrete or a cement surface, where I don’t really have to muscle the ball, I just have to release it nicely and I know that is my sweet spot, so I try to do it,” he stated.

In the first innings of the match, Ashwin claimed the wickets of WI captain Kraigg Brathwaite, Tangerine Chandrapaul, Alick Athanaze, and Alzarri Joseph.

Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Ravindra Jadeja each removed one batter, while Ashwin was well assisted by Jadeja, who dismissed three Windies batting starters.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young and promising Indian opener, made his debut yesterday. He finished the day undefeated at 40 along with the team’s captain, Rohit Sharma, who was still in the game at 30 not out when the umpire blew the final whistle.
