In the one hour and 34 minute match, the 198th-ranked Indian converted all three breakpoints she received and saved two of the three breakpoints she faced against her 354th-ranked opponent.

She will now compete for a spot in the semifinals against Japan’s Haruka Kaji (ranked 213).

Bhosale, who was rated 336, lost in one hour and 51 minutes in a battle against high-ranked Filipina Alexandra Eala (190).

Yosuke, ranked 78 in the world, was up against Ramkumar in the men’s singles match.

It was always going to be a difficult match for the Indian, who has been badly out of form this season, against Watanuki.

Ramkumar, to his credit, had his stronger Japanese opponent work hard for his 7-5 6-7(3) 7-5 victory in the two hours and forty minute encounter.

In the doubles divisions, Ramkumar and Bhosale are both still competing.
